Membership

The society is non-political, non-sectarian and non-denominational and encompasses all of Ireland and is open to all in accordance with the requirements of membership.

The following types of membership are available:

  • Ordinary members: Anyone paying the current annual subscription
  • Honorary members: At the discretion of the Committee, persons of distinction shall be invited to become honorary members of the Society

Aims of the Society

The objects for which the Irish Society of the Friends of St. James was established are:

  • To advance the education of the public in the pilgrimage of St. James of Compostella (Santiago de Compostella) and it’s related history, art, architecture and music
  • To bring together those interested in the pilgrimage of St. James of Compostella
  • To undertake and promote research into the history of the pilgrimage in Ireland and also in France and Spain, and to foster further studies of related history, art, architecture and music
  • To identify, preserve and safeguard monuments and works of art in Ireland, and also in France and Spain, connected with St. James and the pilgrimage
  • To provide a programme of educational activities for members and future pilgrims
  • To provide practical information on the pilgrimage routes in France and Spain, particularly for those intending to travel on foot or by bicycle
  • To join in any all-European efforts to re-establish authentic pilgrim paths in Europe and to join in refurbishing and maintaining any building on the pilgrimage routes to be used for the purposes of the society
  • To work in close conjunction with or any other society or organisation having similar objectives in all matters relating to St. James and the pilgrimage
